IRC sheriff: Backyard body a homicide

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FL (WFLX) - Sheriff's investigators have determined the body found Thursday in the 4800 block of 61st Court in Vero Beach was that of an adult male between the ages of 18 and 50.

Indian River County Sheriff Deryl Loar said Friday investigators are treating the case as a homicide.

The severely decomposed body was found behind a shed next to a vacant house. The head was detached. The race has not yet been determined.

The victim was 5'10" and weighed 170 lbs.

The sheriff said he is still awaiting an autopsy report.

A lawn care crew found the body Wednesday around 5:30 p.m. The workers then went to a neighbor's home and asked what to do.

"They said there's a dead body...and the head was off," said neighbor Cindy Dean.

"We called 911 and I walked over because I wanted to make sure it wasn't anybody I knew," said Dean.

Indian River County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Jeff Luther said the body had been there 20 to 30 days before it was found.
Investigators are checking missing person reports and any homeless shelters.
