Man turns himself in after fatal shooting in Gifford

GIFFORD, FL (WFLX) -  A shooting overnight Wednesday left one teen dead and another critically injured outside an apartment complex in Gifford.

Investigators with the Indian River Sheriff's Office say they are currently questioning 26-year-old Leshannon Shelly in connection with the shooting of two 19-year-old women late Wednesday night outside the Orangewood Apartments in the 3800 block of 42nd Lane.

Officials say Shelly is a person of interest in this case, and that he turned himself in to the sheriff's office at 5:30 a.m., which is located only a few blocks away from the crime scene. He is currently not a suspect and has not been arrested.

Both teens lived in the apartment building. The shooting took place in the playground park area of the complex, investigators say.

The injured teen was flown to a trauma center. Names of the deceased and injured have not been released. "We feel this was a domestic violence situation," Sheriff's spokesman Jeff Luther told Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers Thursday morning.
He said the hospitalized woman is the girlfriend of the man who is being questioned, and that an argument preceded the shooting.

Investigators quote Shelly as saying he had nothing to do with the shooting.

Apartment complex resident Toni Ausby was sitting on her porch across the street from the shooting scene when she heard four gunshots and knew they weren't firecrackers.

Sirens sounded and when she went to the scene, she saw a young woman shot and on the ground. Then deputies and emergency vehicles converged and "there was chaos," she said.
