Cold snap: Stay warm safely By Rachel Leigh | January 4, 2012 at 3:09 PM EST - Updated June 26 at 5:45 AM ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FL (WFLX) - Staying warm can come at a price, if you're not careful. A certain kind of heater can be dangerous when it's misused. The St. Lucie County Fire Department is urging people to stay warm and safe. The National Fire Protection Agency says space heaters cause four out of five, or 82 percent, of home heating fire deaths. "You want to keep anything that will burn away from your space heaters, your wood burning stoves, and fire places," said St. Lucie County firefighter Ron Parrish. Some more tips: 1. Never use your oven for heating. 2. Turn portable heaters off when you leave the room or go to bed. 3. Keep up with your carbon monoxide alarms to avoid the risk of poisoning. 4. Test your smoke alarm at least once monthly. Copyright 2012 WFLX. All Rights Reserved.
