NEW YORK (WFLX)- New research reveals only 25 percent of American children use sunscreen regularly.
Researchers from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York followed 360 kids who were around 10 years old between 2004 and 2007 and surveyed them about whether they ever had sunburns, how much time they spent in the sun and how often they wore sunscreen.
The study found half the children got sunburned before the age of 11 which doubles the risk of developing Melanoma during adulthood.
Three years later, sunburn rates were still high with only one in four kids reporting using sunscreen on a regular basis.
In fact, half of the kids who used sunscreen at the beginning of the study said they no longer did so.
