Rep. Giffords carries out final duties as Congresswoman

TUCSON, AZ (TUCSON NEWS NOW) - Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords is attending President Obama's State of the Union address in Washington D.C. Tuesday evening.

She will sit next to fellow Arizona Representatives Jeff Flake and Raul Grijalva. At last year's address, her seat remained empty, as Giffords fought for her life just days after the Tucson shootings.

Giffords has invited a special guest to the address -- one of her constituents, Brian Kolfage. He survived a mortar attack in Iraq in 2004. The triple amputee has served on Giffords' Veterans' Advisory Council.

Giffords' husband, astronaut Mark Kelly, will also attend the State of the Union. He will be seated with First Lady Michelle Obama, as President Obama's special guest.

Just days before officially resigning from Congress, Rep. Giffords introduced one final bill in the House. The bill calls for tough, new penalties on smugglers who use small, low-flying aircraft to smuggle drugs over the U.S.-Mexico border.

Giffords will vote in support of the bill on Wednesday -- her last official act as a member of Congress.
