Simple Steps to Stop Snoring

(WFLX) - When you have to listen to snoring all night, it can drive you crazy. It's no surprise why couples will sleep in separate rooms. All that noise make it hard to get a good night's rest.

"We should sleep like babies every night," said Edward Grandi, with the American Sleep Apnea Association.

He says simple changes can alleviate your snoring. "Sometimes, it can be as easy as getting a new pillow," he said. "Pillows, especially feathered pillows, become home to dust mites and people become allergic to dust mites, and so when they go to bed, they put their head down on the pillow and all of a sudden their nose clogs up and they're breathing through their mouth."

Breathing through your mouth will make snoring worse. Grandi suggests you try not to sleep on your back either. "You want to sleep with your mouth closed, breathe through your nose and sleep on your side," he said.

It also helps to sleep in a cool, dark room, he said.

While some might think snorting is just a nuisance, it could be a sign of something more serious.

Smoking can also make snoring worse. It tightens the upper airway making it harder to breathe. "If it's chronic, if it's loud, if there are witnessed pauses in breathing," said Grandi. "You kind of sleep, snore, and then stop, and the silence just goes on forever and ever and then all of a sudden there's a gasp."

That could be a sign of sleep apnea, a dangerous condition that needs to be treated.

Other signs of sleep apnea:

  • Waking up with a very sore or dry throat.
  • Occasionally waking up with a choking or gasping sensation.
  • Sleepiness while driving.
  • Restless sleep.
  • Recurrent awakenings or insomnia.
