Dangerous dog treats

Charles and Romeo love their treats. But when Romeo fell ill, Doreen Haas discovered there might be a connection with the treats. "He did not even want to get up and go for a walk, then I knew something was really wrong," she said.

Romeo's vet Dr. Shawna Green immediately suspected the chicken jerky treats that were made in China and were part of Romeo's daily diet. "We have had some cases of diarrhea, and they are eating those treats and it is suspicious," she said.

Dr. Green posted the Food and Drug Administration's recent warning about the treats for all her patients to see. "If there is something in those treats causing illness, we would like to know as soon as possible," she said.

The FDA said 79 more cases have been reported since November.

In an e-mail, the FDA states, "To date, we have not detected any contaminants. Therefore have not issued a recall, we are continuing to test and will notify the public if we find evidence of any contaminants."

We contacted the makers of the two brands of chicken treats Doreen fed her dogs, Waggin Train and Milo's Kitchen. Both responded with written statements.

"At Waggin' Train, the safety of our products - and the pets who consume them - are our top priorities.... all Waggin' Train facilities are designed to meet U.S. Department of Agriculture standards, with dedicated quality control inspectors on site in China who monitor the manufacturing process for safety and quality."

In its e-mail Milo's Kitchen states, "External testing by the American FDA, the American Veterinarian Medical Association and several animal health diagnostic laboratories has not identified any connection between illness and chicken jerky treats."

We found the chicken jerky treats also sold as tenders and strips on the shelves at major stores. They are easy to spot, just look for the made in China label on the back.

Now, the FDA is urging both vets and consumers to report any illnesses they suspect are related to pet food.
