MARTIN COUNTY, FL (WFLX) - The Monkees, with Davy Jones as their leader, burst onto television in the mid-'60s, riding a wave of Beatles-inspired rock 'n' roll. The international fame came and went and Jones eventually moved to Martin County. He was often seen in Stuart.
"The town is going to miss him. He was very visible, around the town a lot, and I think he really loved the theatre," said Mike Braid, a Stuart resident.
Jones was at the Lyric Theatre just last week. We're told he was talking about possibly performing there next fall.
"He was able to sing, dance, tell stories, jokes, I mean, he was phenomenal that way," said Lyric Theatre Executive Director John Loesser.
Wednesday morning, reports say, Jones complained he was having trouble breathing. He was rushed to Martin Health System, where he was pronounced dead. The medical examiner says it was a heart attack.
Jones kept horses. A hand at J-V Ranch in Indiantown, near his home, said he'd ridden Wednesday morning.
Jones sang lead for the Monkees on numerous hits. One of them, "Daydream Believer," reached the top of the charts.
But the fame, locals say, didn't keep him from being down to earth. One day he was peering through the window of Argento, a downtown Stuart jewelry store. The owner's husband, John Peterson, walked out and talked to Jones.
"And he says, 'Here. Here's my card. Call me sometime, and we'll get together.' I said, 'Okay. Great!' That's a pretty nice thing for a guy like that to do," said Peterson.
Indiantown reaped the benefits of Davy Jones' generosity. Photographs were taken just last month of Jones performing at a benefit for Indiantown schools. The stage may have gotten smaller, but the showman never did.
Jones is survived by his wife, Jessica, and four daughters.
