PALM BEACH COUNTY, FL (WFLX) - After the death of a beloved Suncoast Community High School teacher, questions are surfacing regarding how his funeral was funded.

According to the Sun Sentinel, Suncoast teacher John Slattery's funeral was funded with school money.

For $12,000, Slattery, a former computer science teacher, was laid to rest.

He taught at Suncoast for 19 years and passed away February 15.

Suncoast Principal Linda Cartlidge approved the use of school funds for the funeral because, she said, Slattery's family didn't immediately have access to his life insurance, according to the Sun Sentinel.

Palm Beach County school board member Debra Robinson called this decision a "brain fart".

A recent grand jury report cited lack of oversight of school spending controls on the heels of a band director misusing funds for a family trip.

All the money has been recouped through a series of fundraisers, according to the school.
