MIAMI, FL (WFLX)- The Coast Guard has seized more than $43 million in cocaine after stopping a speedboat in the Caribbean Sea.
Officials in Miami said Tuesday the boat was carrying 54 bales of cocaine weighing more than 3,500 pounds. Four suspected smugglers aboard the 35-foot speedboat were taken into custody and will likely face drug trafficking charges.
The boat was spotted March 3 by the crew of a helicopter dispatched from the 270-foot Coast Guard Cutter Northland.
Officials say the seizure was part of Operation Martillo, aimed at halting smuggling of drugs, weapons and cash in waters off Central America. The operation involves several U.S. agencies and Latin American nations.
The Northland's homeport is Portsmouth, Va. Assisting was the 110-foot cutter Pea Island based in Key West.
