Cruise industry leaders re-emphasize safety

MIAMI, FL (WFLX)- Cruise industry leaders are re-emphasizing their commitment to safety and expressing optimism about the future.

Thousands who work in the cruise and travel industries were in Miami Beach Tuesday for this year's annual industry convention. It's the first such gathering since the Costa Concordia sank off the coast of Italy, killing 32 people.

That was just one of the public relations disasters this year for the industry, which was expected to make further progress in recovering from the recession.

After the Concordia sank in January, another Costa ship -- the Allegra -- caught fire and lost power, leaving passengers without working toilets, running water or air conditioning for three days.

Still, industry leaders say a record number of passengers will cruise this year, with 14 new ships debuting.
