Saving at the pump

PALM BEACH COUNTY, FL (WFLX) Most of us feel it every time we fill up. It's sticker shock at what we're paying for a tank of gas.

But are there things you can do to increase your car's fuel efficiency?

Mechanic and business owner Doug Parlamento says yes. He says some of the frustration with high gas prices could be eased if drivers took care of the basic maintenance on their cars. "Upkeep is going to be your best friend," he says.

From under hood to the tires. Routine checks could mean routine savings on gasoline. "It's been laughed at but it actually makes a difference," he said.

According to fueleconomy.gov having the proper air pressure in your tires can improve your gas mileage by more than 3 percent; not doing so can decrease gas mileage by 0.3 percent for every 1 psi drop in pressure of all four tires.

Still some drivers admit they cover the basics that tend to cost more than air.
"I get my oil changed regularly but other than that nothing," says one driver.

And while an oil change can make a significant difference, Parlamento says having the wrong air pressure can take your problems from the gas tank to under the hood. "If the tires are low on air it's going to put residual drag on the entire vehicle which means engine works harder to push the car down the road."
