Surf's up, at an art gallery

BOCA RATON, FL (WFLX)   Florida is rich in surfing history.  Ever since the sport was introduced in Miami, yes Miami, in 1932, surfing has been a part of Florida's culture.

Now you can ride the wave through time and learn how it all progressed.

The Surfing Florida: A Photographic History exhibit is on display at FAU.

Scouring the more than 650 miles of beaches, photos dating back 80 years ago are on display.

But it's more than photographs.

"We tried to make it more interesting rather than be just being a photographic exhibition. We've done a collection of surfboards, from collectors, surfers and others as well, surfing posters, movie posters, record albums so we're trying to represent the culture," said Paul Aho, the curator of Surfing Florida: a Photographic History.

Four world title surfers call Florida home, including 11 time world surfing champion, Kelly Slater.

The exhibit is designed to bring all the history together, along with the surfing community.

"I think it's something the community needs to see. It's like all the history of our state in one place and the community asks for it, because every day I work, someone is like 'Hey where's that board from' and you tell them a cool story, but this has a lot more in one place," said Cheyne Cottrell the owner of Island Water Sports Surf Shop Deerfield.

The exhibit, designed to travel all over the state, wants to swell even bigger, or should I say, smaller?

One little dream we have relative to the touring exhibitions is that in about a year's time that we would launch a book in Miami when the exhibition launches there," said Rod Faulds the FAU University Galleries director.

The Surfing Florida exhibit will be open through mid May at the Schmidt Center Gallery on the FAU campus in Boca Raton. Admission is free.
