ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FL (WFLX) - An elementary school student is dead and 19 others are injured after a school bus crashed into a semi-tractor trailer in St. Lucie County.

It happened at 3:45 p.m. Monday, at the intersection of Okeechobee and Midway Roads.

The bus, driven by Albert Hazen, 56, of Port St. Lucie, was trying to make a left onto Midway Road, but went into the path of a tractor trailer and began to spin.

Frances K. Sweet Elementary School student Aaron Beauchamp, of Port St. Lucie, was later found dead inside.

The tractor trailer, driven by Charles Cooper, 24, of Martinsville, Virginia, flipped over.

Cooper was uninjured. Tuesday morning, a school district spokesperson updated the number of injured to 19.

Five are still being treated at St. Mary's Medical Center and are in stable but critical condition. Seven are being treated at Lawnwood Regional Medical Center. Six others were treated and released from various hospitals Monday night. Hazen, the bus driver, is among the injured.

Many of the students were wearing seat belts. "With the amount of spin on the bus, it'll be part of the investigation whether the young man who is deceased was wearing his seat belt or not," said FHP Lt. Jeff Johnson. "This is a tragedy, especially when children were involved."

State law says seat belts have to be provided to students on a school bus, but only the driver is required to wear it.

Charges are possible against the Hazen.
