Report: Zimmerman acted in self-defense, Martin was aggressor

(WFLX) - An Orlando Sentinel investigation has revealed new details in the case of the slain Florida 17-year-old that has captured attention throughout the United States.

Authorities tell the Sentinel Trayvon Martin punched Neighborhood Watch volunteer George Zimmerman, climbed on top of him and slammed his head into a sidewalk several times before Zimmerman shot and killed him.

While this was initially an account by Zimmerman himself immediately following the February 26 incident, much of the story has been corroborated by witnesses, investigators told the Sentinel.

According to Zimmerman's version of the events, Martin approached him from behind and the two exchanged words before the altercation became physical.

There have been no reports that a witness saw the initial punch Zimmerman told police about. According to the Sentinel report, a witness told television news reporters that Zimmerman was on the ground crying for help while Martin was on top, pounding him. Zimmerman then shot Martin once in the chest at very close range, according to reports. Zimmerman claims he shot Martin in self-defense.

Following the altercation, police told the Sentinel that Zimmerman was bleeding from the nose, had a swollen lip and had bloody lacerations to the back of his head. He was given first aid, but refused to go to the hospital and got medical care the next day.
