FAU Budget Woes

BOCA RATON, FL (WFLX)  As the Spring semester winds down, a cloud hangs over Florida Atlantic University. The dilemma - what combination of cuts will make up for a $24.7 million shortfall.

Thursday the Board of Trustees got a look at what's on the chopping block.

Shutting down the Treasure Coast Campus could save the school $1.7 million. Moving the downtown Fort Lauderdale campus to Boca Raton could save $2 million. Limiting summer courses could save another $500,000.

The last option upsets students who rely on summer courses, so the University is being flexible.

"We're opening additional sections of classes to meet student demand," says VP of Finance Dennis Crudele.

It's a harsh reality for seniors like Michael Miller who took the time to listen to the Trustees. Miller may have to delay graduation because summer classes are limited.

"I'll have to restructure, but that's a sacrifice I'll have to make. FAU is making sacrifices too, so I have to be a team player in this process," says Miller.

FAU could also raise tuition, a possibility Trustee Jeff Fiengold struggles with.

"The administration needs to have shared sacrifice, I'm not voting for a tuition increase unless there is shared sacrifice," says Fiengold.

The Board of Trustees will discuss the options and make a final decision in June. The budget is required to be set by July 1st.
