TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- Florida is now offering free "do not call" listings to protect consumers against unwanted telephone solicitations.
The state previously charged $10 for a new listing and $5 for an annual renewal.
A Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services spokesman on Monday said the agency has stopped charging although a new law dropping the fee doesn't go into effect until July 1.
That's because the list is updated quarterly so anyone signing up now wouldn't be added until July 1, anyway.
Another feature of the law is that it allows the department to slap businesses with an administrative fine of up to $1,000 for each violation instead as an alternative to seeking a civil penalty.
