Turtles lay eggs early in southwest Florida

BONITA SPRINGS, FL . (AP)-  Loggerhead turtle nesting season has started early in southwest Florida.

Nesting season officially begins May 1 and runs through the end of October. But the News-Press of Fort Myers reports that volunteers spotted a turtle nest this week in Bonita Springs. And at least one turtle on Captiva Island laid her eggs last week.

Turtle experts say they think eggs were laid sooner because the milder weather this winter kept the Gulf of Mexico warmer. Turtles typically start nesting when the water temperature reaches 80 degrees.
