Martin County residents hit by crime wave

SEWALL'S POINT, FL (WFLX)- Neighbors and police are fed up with burglars targeting their Martin County homes after six home invasion burglaries in Sewall's Point in the last two weeks.

A public meeting took place in Martin County Tuesday night regarding the thefts.

The home robberies took place in an eight day span in mid to late April, and caught the community off guard. Now they're searching for answers.

The burglars often pose as power company employees and lawn crews before breaking in homes, according to police.

Investigators also believe these thieves are part of a large organized crime ring in Broward County that rents cars and drives them to the Treasure Coast.

Police say some of the items that are targeted are TV's, jewelry and guns and the robberies usually occur between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Town commissioners are debating whether or not to possibly hire a private security firm or set up a neighborhood crime watch.
