Foreclosed: McCray's Backyard BBQ

RIVIERA BEACH, FL (WFLX) - A special magistrate authorized the foreclosure of a popular Palm Beach County restaurant Thursday morning.

At a 9 a.m. hearing, it was decided that McCray's Backyard BBQ property on 45th Street in Mangonia Park will be foreclosed on.

The business's 45th Street location became a point of controversy after the town asked owner Derrick McCray to build a permanent building at the site, instead of the trailer he has used for years.

The town ruled the use of a food trailer violated town code, resulting in more than 130 thousand dollars in code enforcement fines that McCray has not paid.

The non-payment led to three liens placed on McCray's 45th Street property.

After the hearing, McCray said, "I'm going to keep fighting. I'm going to fight. I'm going to fight to the end because, I feel, as a red-blooded American, that's my property."

Mangonia Park Town Manager Lee Leffingwell said the town has no plans for the property.

Leffingwell added the town was patient with McCray's plans, but had to move forward. "Everybody's been very, very patient. It just became a point where he has to do something to run his business, as everyone has to do."

McCray says he plans to complete construction on an unfinished building on the 45th Street property and make that his permanent business location.

The business is currently using a site at 2700 Broadway in Riviera Beach and plans to open another temporary location on Belvedere Road in West Palm Beach.
