Hundreds remember PFC Michael Metcalf

BOYNTON BEACH, FL (WFLX) -- Hundreds packed inside the First Baptist Church of Boynton Beach on Saturday to honor and bid farewell to U.S. Army PFC Michael Metcalf, 22, who was killed whiled while serving in Afghanistan.

Metcalf was killed by an improvised explosive device nearly two weeks ago.

"I'm so sorry Mike I couldn't have been there. Everyone wishes in this room that you could be here, to make everyone smile and laugh one more time," said Grant Barge, Metcalf's friend.

During the two hour service, Metcalf's family was joined by friends, Freedom Riders and several active duty military members who served with Metcalf.

A friend at one point even got up and sang a song he wrote about "Cowboy Mike."

"Mike lived more in his 22 years than most of us will ever do in 80 years. His loss has left holes in our hearts that will never be filled. Instead we pass them with enough memories to last us until we see him in heaven," said T.J. Fitzgerald, Metcalf's friend.

Everyone who spoke of the 22-year-old soldier said Metcalf was selfless, brave and was a one-of-a-kind guy who always lit up a room. They said Metcalf was taken too soon, but will not be forgotten.

"There's nothing that will ever compare to what he did for me, his family, his friends and everybody in this country," said Brandon O'Keefe, Metcalf's friend.

Metcalf was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and the Purple Heart, medals his mother Kim Metcalf accepted.

The service concluded with a serviceman saying, "Wars are fought by man, but won by men like Michael Metcalf."

Metcalf's family will travel to Arlington National Cemetery where Metcalf will be buried with full military honors on Thursday.
