Skechers $40 million dollar settlement

(WFLX)- Skechers has agreed to pay 40-million dollars to settle charges it misled customers about the health and fitness benefits of its toning sneakers.

The Federal Trade Commission announced the hefty fine today.

According to the F-T-C, the California-based shoemaker made unfounded claims that products, like its "Shape-ups" shoes, would help people lose weight and tone-up without going to the gym.

Skechers introduced "Shape-ups" in 2009.

They cost up to 100-dollars a pair.

Sales peaked, thanks to endorsements from celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Brooke Burke.

The F-T-C says Skechers also made deceptive claims about other products including "Resistance Runner," "Toners" and "Tone-up" shoes

The settlement money will be used to provide refunds to buyers of the toning sneakers.
