LOXAHATCHEE GROVES, FL (WFLX) - A man is dead after a Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office deputy shot him during an altercation, according to PBSO spokesperson Teri Barbera.

Seth Adams, 24, was shot by the deputy near the One Stop Garden Shop on 1950 A Road and Okeechobee Boulevard in Loxahatchee Groves and was pronounced dead at St. Mary's Medical Center Thursday morning.

A family spokesperson is calling his death senseless.

Robert Saylor, a family friend speaking on behalf of the family, said Adams was shot four times in the torso in the parking lot of the shop and was unarmed.

Saylor said the 24-year-old, who recently moved back to Loxahatchee Groves from Albany, New York, works at the garden shop, was a mild mannered person and wouldn't hurt a fly.

His brother, David Adams, owns the property and found his brother bloody in the back of the property, Saylor said.

According to PBSO spokesperson Teri Barbera, an on-duty sheriff's deputy came across Adams just before midnight Wednesday and they got into a fight. At some point, PBSO reports, the deputy "feared for life" and shot Adams in his waist.

David described his brother as "timid" to their family pastor.

Investigators towed a blue pickup truck from the shooting scene at 4:45 a.m. and sheriff's office officials say they are in the preliminary stages of investigating the incident.

Barbera said the deputy was working undercover and Adams confronted the deputy.

It was then the deputy, who was wearing a tactical uniform with a visible sheriff's badge, identified himself as a deputy and for unknown reasons an altercation occurred, she said.

The sheriff's office confiscated all the computers at the garden shop, including the ones connected to the numerous surveillance cameras, the family said.

The deputy, only being identified as a male who is a veteran, has been placed on paid administrative leave.
