FCAT reading scores lower

WEST PALM BEACH, FL (WFLX) - Nearly 3,000 third graders in Palm Beach County may not be moving onto fourth grade.

The Florida Department of Education just announced nearly a fifth of the county's students failed the reading portion of the FCAT. Only 56 percent of third grades scored at or above level three using the new FCAT.

Since a new test was used this year, officials had to estimate how it compared to last year's results. They say 57 percent of third graders last year would have scored at level three.

In math, 58-percent of students got a level three score. That compares to 56 percent of last year's class using a similar estimate.

All in all, reading is slightly behind while math is slightly ahead.

We'll have much more on how local schools tested tonight on First at 4.
