Jacksonville readies for Tropical Storm Beryl

JACKSONVILLE, FL (WFLX) -- Beryl is interrupting one of the  busiest weekends of the year in Jacksonville.

Between a soccer match featuring the U.S. national team, a major music festival, and travelers enjoying memorial day weekend, residents are not focusing on the impending storm.

For most of the day, the beach was packed. One family traveled from Atlanta to spend Memorial Day weekend in Jacksonville, their paradise. They'd heard a storm was coming, but it's not big enough to change anything.

However, city officials are changing things.

"We are canceling the jazz festival for Sunday, the outdoor events," Mayor Alvin Brown said.

A disappointment for thousands who traveled long distances for the festival.

"This storm has already affected public safety," he said.

Officials removed as much loose debris as possible Saturday.

His demeanor is in contrast to people who took in an evening soccer match between the U.S. and Scotland.

At a shopping plaza, no one we spoke to was stocking up with supplies, not even with Beryl less than 24 hours from landfall.

"I'm from the gulf. If there's going to be a storm, it's going to be there. I know hurricane weather. This isn't it," Lela Chappell said.
