Corneal Warpage

Contact lenses have changed a lot over the years. You can get soft, hard, tinted, disposable and even bifocals. Plus they're much more comfortable than they used to be. In fact sometimes you can even forget you have them in. But if you wear your lenses too long you're at increased risk of what's called corneal warpage. It's not serious, but it can cause blurry vision that no lenses or glasses can correct. More from Mayo Clinic.

"SPEED LIMIT 65."

WATCHING THE WORLD BUZZ BY IS AWESOME TO VICKI SIKKINK.

BUT IT WASN'T SO AWESOME WHEN BLURRY VISION MADE DRIVING HER VW BEETLE PRETTY DICEY.

"IT WAS ALMOST GETTING DANGEROUS."

ESPECIALLY AT DUSK. IN THE RAIN. VICKI COULDN'T SEE...

"SIGNS, FOR DIRECTIONS, AND TURN OFFS." FOR EXAMPLE SHE COULDN'T SEE THIS SIGN UNTIL...

"PROBABLY RIGHT HERE."

AND THAT TRUCK'S LICENSE PLATE?

"NOT AT ALL."

VICKI JUST THOUGHT SHE NEEDED A NEW PRESCRIPTION. BUT SHE ACTUALLY HAD WARPED CORNEAS. YOU SEE, WEARING CONTACTS TOO LONG CAN BLOCK OXYGEN FROM GETTING TO YOUR CORNEA. THIS CAUSES A CHANGE IN THE SHAPE OF THE CORNEA, WHICH IS THE CLEAR TISSUE THAT COVERS THE SURFACE OF YOUR EYE.

"THIS IS MILD TO MODERATE CORNEAL WARPAGE."

DOCTOR MURIEL SCHORNACK, TESTS FOR WARPAGE...

"GOT A GOOD MAP THERE."

BY MAKING A MAP OF THE SURFACE OF THE EYE

"WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR IS A NICE, EVEN PATTERN--NOT LIKE THIS."

TREATMENT INVOLVES STAYING OUT OF CONTACT LENSES FOR UP TO 6 MONTHS. THEN IF YOU DO WEAR CONTACTS AGAIN, BE SURE TO REPLACE THEM WHEN YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO.

"AND NUMBER TWO, MAKE SURE YOU KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN BUT CONTACTS OFF FOR A MINIMUM OF TWO TO THREE HOURS A DAY."

NOW, WITH CLEAR VISION, VICKI'S MORE CONFIDENT BEHIND THE WHEEL OF HER BELOVED BEETLE.

"DR. SCHORNACK DID TEST MY EYES AND SHE DID SAY I WAS SAFE TO DRIVE. HA. HA. HA."

Again, contact lenses can cause warpage by preventing much-needed oxygen from getting to your cornea. The condition won't make you blind, but it can be very inconvenient. You have to stay out of contact lenses and you will have blurry vision until it resolves. The worst that can happen is that your cornea could warp permanently, leaving you with constantly blurry vision.
