Cyclist robbed after riding 1,500 miles for charity

LAKE WORTH, FL (WFLX) - With a bike and a map, 20-year-old Spencer Holm has traveled more than 1,500 miles from Philadelphia to Lake Worth -- all to raise money for the Philabundance food bank in Philadelphia.

The last 24 hours have been the scariest by far. "He snagged it off of my handlebars and took off over these hedges right here," Holm said describing how he was robbed just before midnight Tuesday.

He was robbed after he left his campsite at John Prince State Park to grab a bite to eat.

Near a gas station on Congress Avenue, Holm said, he was approached by two men including Aaron Deyo. "They seemed really interested in my trip. They seemed pretty candid, but I guess I was to find out later that they had some scheme in mind," said Holm

Holm said Deyo and another man, who wasn't charged, tried following him back to his campsite and snatched his bag with most of his belongings inside.

That's when luck was on Holm's side. "There were just flashlights in our faces and loud shouts to get on the ground."

The shouts came from two Palm Beach County Sheriff's Deputies on bike patrol.

They arrested Aaron Deyo on a robbery charge. Deyo's bond was set at $30,000. He'll also have a curfew from 10 p.m. until 6 a.m.

Holm plans to finish his ride and raise awareness for his cause. "From town to town, it's just malnourished citizens that don't really have what everyone is fortunate enough to have," said Holm.

Holm plans to finish his ride in Key West.
