Neighbors react to deputy-involved shooting

SUBURBAN WEST PALM BEACH, FL (WFLX) -- - The wanted carjacker who was shot by Palm Beach County sheriff's deputies on Saturday continues to recover in the hospital after being shot in the shoulder and the hip.

Investigators said Michael James Wallach, 22, allegedly stole a car in Lake Clark Shores on Friday and fled from deputies when they spotted the car and tried to pull him over.

PBSO said Wallach ran from Forest Hill Boulevard firing shots at deputies and eventually fled into a nearby neighborhood on Shawnee Road.

"I heard, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop and then I was just like, 'What is that?.' So I looked out the window and saw all the police and him and it was just like crazy. I was just in shock," said Nicole Mathis, whose apartment window faced the scene.

Gunfire was allegedly exchanged leaving Wallach with two gunshot wounds.

The neighborhood where the shootout happened was on lockdown for most of the evening.

Witnesses who had a front row seat to the exchange of gunfire said they feel luck no residents were hurt.

"It was kind of terrifying. I was hiding in the hallway away from the windows because I'm not getting shot," said Monika Kosiorek, who witnessed shooting.

PBSO also released more information about the extensive criminal background of Wallach. The sheriff's office records indicate Wallach has a past including conspiracy, armed robbery, burglary, resisting with violence, drugs, resisting officers and other various crimes.

"He just got out of prison, he hasn't been that long out. So who knows what else he was going to do," said Sheriff Bradshaw.

Wallach is expected to appear before a judge once he is released from Delray Medical Center.

The deputies involved were placed on paid, administrative leave which is standard protocol.
