Man facing multiple charges after police shootout

SUBURBAN WEST PALM BEACH, FL (WFLX) - Michael James Wallach, 22, is facing multiple charges after a shootout with deputies over the weekend, according to a probable cause affidavit provided by the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators say Wallach was wanted for carjacking charges in a crime that took place in Lake Clark Shores on Friday. When he was approached by deputies Saturday, the encounter ended in a shootout.

Wallach is now facing nine counts of attempted first-degree murder of a law enforcement officer with a firearm, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer with a firearm, and possession of a firearm by a felon.

On Saturday at 7:15 p.m., a deputy spotted Wallach driving a stolen Cadillac, according to an incident report.

When the deputies followed Wallach, they attempted to deploy fire deflation devices on 10th Avenue North in Palm Springs. Wallach avoided the device, and sped away while being pursued by several marked PBSO vehicles, according to the report.

Wallach was seen driving up a sidewalk to travel past traffic near S. Congress Avenue and Forest Hill Boulevard. He then lost control of the car and came to a stop on Cherokee Road after crashing into several concrete blocks, the report states.

According to PBSO, Wallach pointed a loaded gun at law enforcement officers, who were in marked patrol vehicles, and fired at them. Wallach then fired his gun at the PBSO helicopter. PBSO investigators say deputies were in fear for their lives and fired back.

Wallach fired first according to the report, and as deputies fired back, he was hit twice. He is currently receiving medical treatment and has not appeared before a judge for his first appearance.

Wallach has a criminal history including conspiracy, armed robbery, burglary, resisting with violence, drugs, resisting officers and other various crimes, according to PBSO.

The deputies involved were placed on paid, administrative leave which is standard protocol.
