CALCASIEU PARISH, LA (KPLC) - An early morning chase Wednesday on I-10 westbound near Sulphur led to one arrest and a variety of charges. The pursuit by Calcasieu Parish sheriff's officials reached speeds of more than 120 mph.
At the wheel of the runaway vehicle? An 11-year-old Lafayette boy, police say.
Sheriff's Cpl. Landry Willis attempted to stop the car around 2 a.m. for a traffic violation, but the driver refused to stop, speeding away from the officer and driving erratically. Willis said the car swerved from lane to lane and passed a number of other vehicles, eventually reaching speeds of 120 mph.
The driver attempted to flee via the Vinton exit ramp but was unable to maintain control. The car struck the guardrail on one side, went across the road and hit the other rail, coming to a stop.
The juvenile, apparently uninjured, was taken into custody and charged with reckless operation and flight from police. He was subsequently released to his parents.
The unidentified youth told deputies he was en route to Houston, a 216-mile trip that would take about four hours to finish.
