K-9 deputy recovering after shooting

PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL (WFLX) -- The Palm Beach County Sheriff's K-9 deputy that was shot Monday evening is sedated and stitched up at Pet Emergency and Referral Service. It's on Northlake Boulevard in Palm Beach Gardens. The Sheriff's Office said the nine-year-old German Shepard with a black coat had to undergo emergency surgery. His name has not been confirmed.

It's unclear how many times the K-9 was shot, but deputies say he has two visible wounds. One on his left shoulder and another on his right side. A Sheriff's Office spokesman says the foreign object found in his body will have to stay put for right now.

Deputies comforted each other outside the pet hospital Monday night. At least 20 law enforcement vehicles were in the parking lot at one point.

K-9 members from other agencies came out to offer their support. This is a highly emotional experience for them because their dogs are not only their partners, but also their family members.

PBSO says the K-9 was shot in the Casa del Monte mobile home park in suburban West Palm Beach, Monday evening.

A suspect is accused of shooting and killing a woman and then shooting a deputy. In the end, authorities say a deputy shot and killed the suspect.

Veterinarians will observe the K-9 through the night. No word on when he'll be released.
