Car dealership pushing for world's largest flagpole

LAKE PARK, FL (WFLX) - For Lake Park car dealer Earl Stewart and family, the sky may really be the limit.

"He dreams big, and he's asking for something pretty big," said Stu Stewart concerning his father's plans to build a 341-foot flag pole on his used car lot on U.S. 1. "He thought it would be something special to do in our community. We don't have anything like that."

Attached to that pole would be a 30 by 60-foot American flag. Stewart says that would make it the world's biggest. "It would be huge in comparison," said Jonathan Dickinson, owner of Florida FreeDivers, which is next door to the dealership. "It would make everything else quite small."

"If they can make it safe and everything's fine, than I don't see a problem with it," said Linda Ghidella, who owns Out To Lunch Deli, near the Earl Stewart car dealership.

The proposal calls for a flag pole that is as tall as a 23-story building, about 36 feet taller than the Statue of Liberty. The Stewarts want the flag to be a tribute to the first responders who died on 9/11. "They're going to look up at that flag and remember," said Stewart. "That's special."

The Stewarts said they had to obtain Federal Aviation Administration approval to be able to construct a flag pole so tall.

First, the Stewarts need approval from the Lake Park town commission, which will make the final specifications.

Commissioners meet at 6:30 pm Wednesday.
