Barrels of sodium hydroxide wash ashore

LAKE WORTH, FL (WFLX) - Barrels believed to contain sodium hydroxide have washed ashore south of the Lake Worth Pier, according to Palm Beach County Fire Rescue.

According to the National Institutes for Health sodium hydroxide is an odorless, white solid that absorbs moisture from the air. It is used to make textiles, cellophane, and pulp and paper, in soaps and detergents, and for etching and electroplating.

It is not clear where the barrels came from.

Fire rescue and police have cordoned off the area.
