Unsolved murder heats back up with severed head discovery

POMPANO BEACH, FL (WFLX) - Detectives are looking at possible connections between body parts that washed up on South Florida beaches and a grisly international murder case.

Luka Rocco Magnotta is behind bars in Germany. He is accused of killing, dismembering and possibly even eating body parts of an ex-boyfriend in Montreal.

It's his M.O. and his extensive travels that has detectives taking a new look at a cold case in Pompano Beach. In 2009, the body parts of Omar Laparra began washing ashore.

Magnotta has also gotten the interest of Los Angeles police. They are looking at whether there is a connection to the discovery of a severed head near the Hollywood sign in January. "In order to be as thorough as possible, when they heard about this crime, of course, they contacted the folks up in Canada just to see if there's a chance these are related," said Commander Andrew Smith with the Los Angeles Police Department.

There is no concrete evidence linking Magnotta to either murder.
