Stuart Post Office without AC for weeks

STUART, FL (WFLX) Teresa Lundberg loads a bin filled with mail into the trunk of her car. She's standing in the parking lot of the post office on Johnson Avenue in Stuart. She says it's cooler here than inside.

"It's like, egh," she says, making a disgusted face.

Lundberg did not want to come to the post office today. She says her colleagues at Gulfstream Business Bank actually fought over the chore.

"I'm not going. You're going. No," she said, reenacting the conversation.

It's not the task of collecting 30 people's mail that bothers her. It's the heat.

"It's probably over the 90s, at least," said Lundberg.

If they're not sweating walking in, some customers say they're definitely sweating walk out of the post office.
"It's like a sauna in there," said Stuart resident Bill Johnson.

The culprit for the steamy environment? The air conditioning unit. It's broken. People who complained told us it's been two months since the AC worked properly.
"We go to the moon and stuff, and they can't fix this?" asked Earl Smith, a post office patron.

Fans and 10 portable AC units chug away inside, but customers say they're not helping. Some patrons say they're concerned for postal employees' wellbeing.

"Oh my God. I feel terrible for them. They're dripping sweat in there," Hailey Fintz said.
"I'd call in sick till they fixed it. Or find another job," said Johnson.

A U.S. Postal Service spokeswoman says immediately after the AC broke, they tried to fix it. But the building was built in the early '70s, so it took time to find compatible parts. Then, she says the duct work design prevented the portable units from working.

"They need to definitely do something with the air," said Lundberg.

The postmaster says the AC parts came in today, and as of Friday afternoon, AC experts were working on fixing the permanent unit.
