The suspect, Joel Davila, remains at large and is considered armed and dangerous, according to deputies.
Investigators said shots rang out inside a home at the Sand and Sea mobile home park near the 1600 block of NW 21st Terrace in Boynton Beach.
A sea of yellow and red crime scene tape was strung across the road for most of the evening, bringing out residents to the streets who heard what happened.
"We come outside, and there's like tons of cops out here and everything, and their guns are drawed and the helicopter was here, and it was just crazy," said Sandra Conlin, who was home at the time of the shooting.
PBSO deputies said Davila was visiting his mother at her home when he allegedly told his mother's boyfriend he was not wanted at the house anymore.
Investigators said an argument broke out between the men, escalating when Davila allegedly pulled out a gun, shooting his mother's boyfriend multiple times.
"We don't know what ignited the kid to go off the way that he did. From talking to his mother, it was just like he turned on a switch and snapped," said Palm Beach County Sheriff's Sgt. Rick McAfee.
Investigators said after firing his gun, Davila fled the scene and traveled through a neighborhood full of families with children.
"There's a baby in the house here, there's bullets flying you know. I don't know if they did it inside the house or if it was out in the street, I mean these are trailers. They're paper thin," said Conlin. "You know a bullet can go right through it, there's a baby in the house. You know it's scary."
The victim was airlifted to Delray Medical Center for treatment. Investigators said he is expected to recover.
Davila is considered armed and dangerous. He was last seen wearing a blue and white letterman jacket, black ball hat, and blue jeans.
