Opening statements begin in teen stomping case

DEERFIELD BEACH, FL (WFLX) - You're going to likely see 17-year-old Wayne Treacy take the insanity defense when opening statements start at 1 p.m. Monday in Broward County Court.

Treacy is accused of stomping on Josie Lou Ratley, also a teenager, outside Deerfield Beach Middle School in 2010.

Investigators say he was wearing steel toe boots, and Ratley now has permanent brain damage.

Defense lawyers say Treacy suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder stemming from his brother's recent suicide.

You'll also hear them say Ratley enticed the attack by sending rude text messages to Treacy about his dead brother.

If the defense doesn't work, Treacy could face up to 50 years in prison.
