Family left motherless after hit and run

Diego Francisco Pascual Diego Francisco Pascual

LAKE WORTH, FL (WFLX) - He is accused of running down a Lake Worth family of five this weekend on North H Street. Monday night, Diego Pascual sits in jail as a family copes with the loss of mother.

Detectives say Diego Francisco Pascual was going 50 miles per hour when he crashed into the family. He then drove off -- prompting an all out search for him. Deputies searched for hours before Pascual turned himself in.

Road rash bruises are on one side of 3-year-old Manuel's face and his 6-year-old sister, Carmina. They are two of five people, sheriff's deputies say, were hit by an SUV driven by Diego Pascual. Ten-year-old Maria is the only one of her family who got out of the way. "My big sister said he saw us and was trying to kill us," said Maria.

Palm Beach County sheriff's detectives say Pascual was angry at Maria's big sister, Ana. They say Pascual was her live-in boyfriend and was drinking the night before.

Out of anger, investigators say, Pascual crashed into the family killing the kids mother, Cristina Andres.

The family, from Guatemala, is crushed. "They cry; they know what happened out there. Everybody has been crying all day," said Cristina's brother, Andres.

Andres is in disbelief about what investigators say Pascual did. "Why? It's his family, his father-in-law, his mother-in-law and the girlfriend. Why?"

A sheriff's report says Pascual told investigators he wanted to scare and hurt them. Instead, he killed Cristina and seriously injured her husband, Miguel Pedro Francisco.

Miguel is still recovering at Delray Medical Center. "He talked to me; he cried because he got the idea, right now, that my sister's died," said Andres.

Now, these bruised kids are left without a mother.

In court Monday morning, Pascual was also given an immigration hold. This gives local law enforcement the ability to detain undocumented immigrants until immigration officials take them.

In jail, he's looking at a first degree murder charge and five counts of attempted murder.
