Zimmerman gives first interview with media

Posted:

(WFLX) - We are learning more about the night George Zimmerman shot and killed Trayvon Martin.

The community watch volunteer, at the center of a firestorm over the shooting and facing a murder charge, spoke publicly for the first time Wednesday night in an interview on Fox News Channel's Hannity Show.

His message was clear and direct. "I'm not a racist, and I'm not a murderer," said Zimmerman.

In his interview, Zimmerman discussed, in detail, the night he shot and killed Trayvon Martin saying it was the unarmed teenager that initiated the deadly confrontation. "He started bashing my head into the concrete sidewalk. As soon as he broke my nose, I started yelling for help," Zimmerman recalled.

It was during that fight, he says, both he and Martin reached for the gun strapped to Zimmerman's waist. The gun Zimmerman fired one time -- taking the teenager's life.

Zimmerman said he didn't regret following Martin that night or carrying a gun, and there was nothing he would have done differently. "I feel that it was all God's plan and for me to second guess it or judge it um..."

Immediately, after the broadcast, Trayvon's father, Tracy Martin, released this written statement: "We must worship a different God because there is no way that my God would have wanted George Zimmerman to kill my teenage son".

Zimmerman had a direct apology for Martin's parents. "I am sorry that they had to bury their child. I can't imagine what it must feel like, and I pray for them daily."

As he now prepares for what is sure to be an explosive and emotional murder trial, Mark O'Mara, George Zimmerman's attorney, says he plans to file motions soon to release more details about "witness nine", the person who has accused Zimmerman of molesting her at an early age.

Zimmerman faces second degree murder charges for the shooting death of Trayvon Martin in February.
