Two men on the loose after motel shooting

BOYNTON BEACH, FL (WFLX) - Two men are still on the loose after, police say, one of them shot a man inside a Boynton Beach motel room.

Around 4:10 a.m. Tuesday, Neil Rogers, 45, heard a knock at his door while staying at Seven J's Motel on Northeast 8th Avenue.

According to Boynton Beach police spokesperson Stephanie Slater, when Rogers opened the door, two men pushed their way into his room and robbed him at gunpoint.

Slater said one of the suspects pistol-whipped Rogers, and shot at him twice, hitting him once. The other suspect was carrying a bag, Slater said. They took off on foot.

Rogers is in critical condition at Delray Trauma Center. Police say he is a pipe fitter from Trinity, Florida, and owner of Florida Sewer & Storm Inc. He has been staying at the motel for several weeks while working on a project in the area, Slater said.

Rogers was staying with a co-worker in the motel room. Francis Renda Jr., 36, of Sarasota was in the room at the time of the robbery but was not injured, Slater said.

Another motel guest says he is concerned for his safety. "I'm kinda nervous and just amazed at the same time. It could've happened to anybody," says Scott Richardson.

Richardson is from Indiana. He's staying at the motel while working on a construction project in Boynton Beach for two months. He says he was up until 5 a.m. but didn't hear the gunshots. "There shouldn't be a concern about robbery suspects targeting motel guests. We don't believe that to be the case," says Slater.

It is unknown at this time what the suspects stole from the victim, Slater said.

The suspects are described as two black males in their 20s wearing white T-shirts and black shorts. One had short dreadlocks; the other had long dreadlocks, according to police.

Boynton Beach Police are asking anyone with information to call 561-732-8116 or Crime Stoppers of Palm Beach County at 800-458-TIPS.
