Mini-season: Lust for lobster can lead to mayhem

JUPITER, FL (WFLX) - Spiny lobster mini-season is now underway.

It's a two day event allowing recreational fishermen the chance to catch some of the crustacean before commercial fishermen put out their traps on August 1 -- but the event can sometimes be deadly.

Every year since 2004, at least one diver has died during mini-season, and 22 people have died during mini-season in the past decade.

Often divers can get separated from their boats, don't know how to drive a boat, or get so excited about catching lobsters they forget about size limits and bag limits.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission agents say divers must use a dive flag while in the water so boaters are aware of their location.

Aside from safety rules, FWC agents will also make sure fishermen are abiding by the possession limit in place. Fishermen can only catch 12 lobsters per person, per day.
