Missing diver swims to shore

JUPITER, FL (WFLX) - A man, who went missing while diving for lobster off Jupiter Wednesday evening, was found shortly before midnight after swimming to shore not far from Hobe Sound Beach.

Update, THU 8 AM: Police from Jupiter Island say they found the missing diver on private property. His brother was then called to the scene and took him home.

The unidentified diver was reported missing at 7:13 p.m., Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Teri Barbera said.

He was one of two brothers who had gone out on a recreational boat. The diver was in about 80 feet of water about a mile offshore, just north of Ocean Cay Park, when he went missing, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

The sheriff's office and the U.S. Coast Guard both had helicopters searching the area by air, and boats from the sheriff's office, Coast Guard, Jupiter and Tequesta police departments were searched the water. FWC officers also assisted with the search.

The lobster mini-season began shortly after midnight Wednesday.

Previously: A search is taking place Wednesday night for a missing diver off the coast of the Jupiter Inlet.

Multiple helicopters and several boats are currently looking for the diver.

The diver was first reported missing just after 7:15 p.m. Wednesday.

According to the Coast Guard, two brothers were out looking for spiny lobsters during lobster mini season. One brother went diving and the other was supposed to be watching out for him.

However, the brother on the boat lost sight of the dive flag.

The Coast Guard, Palm Beach Sheriff's Office and the Florida Wildlife Commission have boats in the water searching for the diver.

The Coast Guard and PBSO have helicopters in the air assisting in the search.
