Health department patient names, SSN leaked

PALM BEACH COUNTY, FL (WFLX) - If you've been a patient through the Palm Beach County Health Department, your private information may have been disclosed to an unauthorized source, according to the Palm Beach County Health Department.

Health department officials issued a public notice Friday morning that some patients of its health centers may have had confidential information contained in their records leaked.

The breach occurred when an employee created a client list, containing names and Social Security numbers, from patients at the clinics and attempted to mail the list, according to health department spokesperson Tim O'Connor.

Law enforcement confiscated the list containing 86 names in May and advised they were used for fraudulent activity O'Connor said.

According to officials, the confiscated document contained names and Social Security numbers. Medical information, bank account, credit card or other personal information was not included.

"We are taking every precaution possible and cooperating with law enforcement to assure all records are maintained with the utmost of security," Health Department Director Alina Alonso said in a media release.

While those with leaked information have been notified by mail, Alonso said the health department has not been able to contact everyone affected by the breach.

O'Connor said the employee responsible for the breach has been permanently removed from access to any and all health department information.

Officials say a free report can be obtained at If you have had fraudulent activity, it is suggested you contact the Palm Beach County Sheriff Office.
