Woman swallows knife... again

ATLANTA GA (WFLX) - A 30-year-old Atlanta woman, trying to impress her friends, was rushed to the hospital after accidentally swallowing a knife.

According to a recent report from the New England Journal of Medicine, the woman inserted the knife into her throat to demonstrate to her friends that she no longer had a gag reflex.

But when she unexpectedly laughed, the knife moved into her esophagus.

The woman, who has a history of bulimia, was rushed to the hospital, according to the New England Journal of Medicine.

Radiographs reveal the knife within the "distal esophagus and proximal stomach," a release reads.

Doctors performed a "rigid esophagogastroduodenoscopy," a minimally invasive procedure that does not require an incision.

The woman, who has not been identified, resumed eating without any complications, according to doctors.

According to the New England Journal of Medicine, her husband later disclosed to doctors that she had swallowed a knife four years earlier. In that instance, its removal required surgery.

"Consultation with a psychiatrist was recommended, and the patient was later transferred to an inpatient psychiatric unit," a media release reads.
