Vero to host "Tunnel to Towers" 5K

VERO BEACH, FL (WFLX) - Vero Beach city leaders are hoping some of America's bravest will inspire you to get out and run.

On September 8, Vero Beach will be one of four cities in Florida hosting its own "Tunnel to Towers" 5k event.

It's based on the annual race in New York City commemorating 9/11 that raises money to build homes for severely wounded veterans and their families.

Marine Corporal Todd Nicely just received his home. A mine in Afghanistan left him a quad amputee, but through rigorous rehab, he is one of only five survivors of his type of injury ever.

Corporal Nicely lead last year's "Tunnel to Towers" run in New York. "It was kind of emotional, and, like they said, it's something you can't describe unless you do it or see it yourself," said Corporal Nicely.

Nicely who lives in Missouri, was given a key to the city of Vero Beach Tuesday, as were two retired New York City fire chiefs.

If you'd like more information about next month's race, which will be held at Riverside Park, call Runners Depot in Vero Beach at 772-569-7364.
