CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -
Barack Obama's speech tonight must contain a vision for where he wants to take the country, according to a University of North Carolina at Charlotte professor who has written a book analyzing the President's speeches and writings.
Dr. Richard Leeman said Obama can't simply say he is offering more of the same; he needs to say where the country is going.
"Obama consistently portrays freedom and equality as essential to human nature and the American spirit...Those themes have been used throughout his speeches and writing, and have also been carried throughout the Democratic National Convention," said Leeman.
He predicts Obama will use the podium to remind people how far the country has come in improving opportunity.
"One of his favorite metaphors is that of a journey," Leeman said. "I think you will see a lot of that type of rhetoric in his speech."
