Former medical examiner accused of keeping human organs

PENSACOLA, FL (WFLX) - A former medical examiner is facing charges -- accused of keeping human body parts in a rented storage locker.

Dr. Michael Berkland was arrested Friday in Pensacola on charges of improperly storing hazardous waste.

The remains were found after a storage locker he rented was auctioned off after Berkland failed to make payments.

The medical examiner working this case says the organs came from private autopsies Berkland performed at funeral homes in the Panhandle.

Prosecutors expect to file more charges.
