Deputy struck on I-95 while helping motorist

LAKE WORTH, FL (WFLX) - Only one southbound lane is getting through after a deputy-involved crash on Interstate 95 near 6th Avenue in Lake Worth.

Palm Beach Fire Rescue notified Broward County Sheriff's Office dispatch at 5:45 a.m. they were airlifting a Broward deputy to Delray Medical Center after he was struck by a vehicle in the southbound lanes of I-95.

The deputy was heading to work but stopped to aid a motorist involved in an accident and was out of his vehicle when he was struck, according to a BSO spokesperson.

The deputy was transported via Trauma Hawk as a trauma alert, but is said to be alert and talking, the BSO spokesperson said.

Traffic is backed up to 10th Avenue. The 10th Avenue on-ramp was temporarily shut down, but has since been reopened.

As an alternate route, take Florida's Turnpike, or use Congress Avenue or Military Trail and rejoin I-95 after 6th Avenue.
