PORT ST. LUCIE, FL (WFLX) - An investigation in underway in Port St. Lucie after police said a three-year-old boy was killed and a five-year-old boy was injured as a result of being hit by a Chevrolet Malibu.
Police said the two boys somehow made it out of their home near Port St. Lucie Boulevard and Corsica Road and walked about 50 feet to a median.
Investigators said the boys were playing in the median when both darted into the eastbound lanes of Port St. Lucie Boulevard and were hit by a car.
Both boys were taken St. Mary's Hospital. The five-year-old is recovering but police said the three-year-old died as a result of his injuries.
Police said they are investigating why the boys were out in the middle of the road and called the incident "tragic."
"When we're out with adults or something like that, it's very busy and of course later on the human factor settles in. But when you come up on a child that's been hit, it's right in front the entire time. So controlling your emotions on something like that is very difficult," said Terry Russell of the Port St. Lucie Police Department.
Police said they did collect blood from the driver of the Malibu and said the driver is cooperating. A spokesperson said the preliminary results of the investigation indicate the driver did everything in his power to avoid the incident.
The parents of the children were questioned and told police they believe the boys might have got out through the window.
