(WFLX) - Plans to execute a convicted South Florida killer have been stopped -- at least temporarily.
The U.S. Supreme Court Tuesday night upheld a stay of execution for John Ferguson. His execution was scheduled for Tuesday evening. He's been on death row for more than three decades.
The lawyers for the 64-year-old man say he should not be executed because he suffers from severe mental illness.
Ferguson was convicted of killing eight people in South Florida in the 1970s. The execution is delayed until the first week of November, if not longer.
